Ans: Tuesday.

2. A man has 53 socks in his drawer: 21 identical blue, 15 identical black and 17 identical red. The lights are fused and he is completely in the dark. How many socks must he take out to make 100 per cent certain he has a pair of black socks?

Ans: 40 socks

Explanation:

If he takes out 38 socks, although it is very unlikely, it is possible they could all be blue and red. To make 100 percent certain that he also has a pair of black socks he must take out a further two socks.

3. Gordon is twice as old as Tony was when Gordon was as old as Tony is now. The combined age of Gordon and Tony is 112 years. How old are Gordon and Tony now?

Ans: Gordon 64 and Tony 48

Explanation:

When Gordon was 48, Tony was 32(ie half the age Gordon is now)

4. A bag of potatoes weighs 50 lbs divided by half of its weight. How much does the bag of potatoes weigh?

Ans: 10 lbs

Explanation:

50÷5 = 10

5. How many cases do you need if you have to pack 112 pairs of shoes into cases that each hold 28 shoes?

Ans: 8

Explanation:

112 pairs of shoes = 224 shoes.

= 224 ÷ 28

= 8

6. In a party of 35 people there are twice as many women as children and twice as many children as men. How many of each are there?

Ans: 5 men, 10 children and 20 women

Explanation:

IF x = the number of men,

then x + 2x + 4x = 35

Therefore 7x = 35

So X = 5

7. On taking delivery of a consignment of eggs the market stall owner was furious to find that several were cracked. In fact, on counting them up in order to assess the damage he found that 72 were cracked, which was 12 per cent of the total consignment. How many eggs in total were in the consignment?

Ans: 600

Explanation:

= 72 ÷ 12 × 100

= 600

8. At college, 70% of the students studied Maths, 75% studied English, 85% studied French and 80% studied German. What percentage at least must have studied all 4?

Ans: 10

9. A card player holds 13 cards of four suits, of which seven are black and six are red. There are twice as many hearts as clubs and twice as many diamonds as hearts. How many spades does he hold?

Ans: 6

Explanation:

The player holds 1 club, 2 hearts and 4 diamonds.

As he holds 13 cards (or seven black cards), it follows that there must be 6 spades
